When actors get hurt on set, movie sets mishaps
Natalie Portman
“No pain, no gain,” is a phrase Natalie must be familiar with – she bagged an Oscar for Black Swan but not before a painful rib dislocation. The injury happened after she was lifted up by a dancing partner. Shocked at the lack of onset medic, Natalie agreed to swap a medic for her trailer.

You’d think most people could pick up Nicole with their little finger but not Ewan McGregor – he dropped her during rehearsals for Moulin Rouge! and left her with a broken rib. Naïve Nicole thought those tight corsets might help but no – she cracked the rib again two weeks later.

Ange was left permanently scarred after performing her own stunts in the action thriller Salt. After tumbling into a doorway with a gun, she cut her face just above her nose. “I was bleeding and I have a little scar now,” she said although it doesn’t exactly seem to have hurt her famous looks.

While filming The Passion of the Christ, Jim went through a few ordeals of his own. Not only did he dislocate his shoulder while hanging on the cross but he was struck by lightning filming the Sermon on the Mount. Freaky.
Viggo Mortensen and Maria Bello
An energetic sex scene left Maria and Viggo battered and bruised in A History of Violence. The scene on a wooden stairwell left Bello, “covered from head to toe in black and blue and red bruises.” As for Viggo, Bello said, “I bit the inside of his lip and it was swollen for, like, two days.”

Here’s a good one. While playing Achilles in the film Troy, Brad tore his left Achilles tendon, so-named after the fatal accident that befell his legendary character. Now there’s irony. “It’s sad, it’s stupid, but it’s true,” said a red-faced Brad. “It’s so wrong. It’s such a bad headline.”

Halle’s pretty eyes came under fire during Die Another Day when an explosion went wrong. Debris from a smoke grenade went into the Bond Girl’s eye and an operation swiftly followed. Accident-prone Halle also broke her arm filming dodgy thriller Gothika, adding injury to insult.

The Matrix may have made Carrie-Anne famous but it was also a right royal pain in the leg. She hurt her ankle making The Matrix and then promptly broke her leg making The Matrix 2. Insurance for episode 3 must have been substantial.

While jumping and sliding down a revolving school corridor, the actor fell hard. “It was like a square inside a big hamster wheel. It was crazy! I fell over a few times.”

Again, worse ways to get a scar but Hilary Swank cut her forehead during a love scene with Gerard Butler in PS I Love You. Butler was performing a striptease when he accidentally hit Hilary in the forehead, calling for stitches and a filming halt.

Ben Stiller has many fans but a certain ferret clearly isn’t one of them. The toothy critter took a chunk out of the star during the filming of Along Came Polly and he needed a rabies shot. Perhaps he’d watched There’s Something About Mary and thought Stiller was fair game.
