Oh god no I hope apple doesn't cave to this kind of Orwellian garbage. I feel for all of the victims of DUIs and know that I have personally called the police on a car that was very obviously had an impaired person behind the wheel but as a non drunk driver if I want to avoid being hassled I should be able to.
First of all, DUI checkpoints aren't so frequent that they provide every day hassle to drivers...secondly, they take a very short amount of time to go through (if you havnt been drinking, Cops know). Besides, how is this Orwellian at all? Apple isn't being asked to report users of the application or anything. Sorry man, but if it saves 1 life from drunk driving...it's the right thing to do.

Yeah, this is pretty exciting news. I had already planned to call Verizon this morning to see when my contract is up.
EDIT: $175 termination fee per phone and a good while to go on the contract. Yeouch! I may just have to keep my fingers crossed that Verizon Wireless gets the iPhone late next year.
Yeah, the termination fee is harsh, but I'm honestly not sure I could last another year and a half without throwing my Razr into a trash compactor. I like the phone, but the god-awful interface that Verizon loads onto it is another story.

The only way the iPhone market even makes sense is via an Apple MVNO.
Since when does Apple NOT want to "control the whole widget"? I don't want Apple controlled by the nutjob mobile providers.
As much of an Apple fanboy as I am, I would never use Cingular. But beyond that, it signals that the Apple iPhone will be incredibly lame -- just another music phone (basically an Apple ROKR/SLVR), because that is pretty much all that Cingular trades in.
MVNOs are expensive to lease from other networks and the whole mess of plans makes it a pain the ass. Apple would be better off making something like a smartphone, which is what the iPhone most likely is.
And just because Motorola made ****** phones that ran iTunes on them doesn't mean that Cingular is the one that wants them. Moto was the one that ****ed it all up, not Cingular. If Cingular knew that the Apple phone was going to be great and not be totally crippled like the ROKR was - which was Apple's fault - then they would sell it regardless. Don't have such bias against Cingular. Verizon and Sprint aren't much better, either.

Nothing wierd about that - historians talk about 'Victorian values' to denote a wide collection of social and political mores. People see the politics of fear, of removal of long-held liberties, planting fake new stories in the press, shouting down or restricting of dissent to be the defining characteristics of the 'Bush era'.

ok, so...I wrote this really really really long message, and by the time I had submited it, I had been logged out, and so I lost the whole message. So I'm going to re-write it, but in a much shorter version
Basically I listed all the Ideas I had for the Apple Smartphone. What made the message so long was that I also explained why I wanted each type of feature. I'm going to try and stay away from doing that this time and just list the features but keep in mind that I agree that a lot of these things are a stretch.
- first, call it iMobile instead of iPhone
HARDWARE
- have a full size screen that is a touchscreen.
- have the screen slide up to reveal the keyboard
- have atleast 30 gigs of storage.
- iSight that can rotate. For taking images and having the screen as a viewer, and having the iSight pointed at you for video conferencing
- Use the EvDO technology that the sony treo700 uses that is supposed to be "near broadband speeds"
SOFTWARE
- iPod interface
- mobile iTunes Store, able to download music, shows, and movies on the go.
- ability to record sounds and voices
- ability to record video
- mobile versions of Mail, Address Book, Calender, iPhoto (displaying photos you take or upload) and able to sync perfectly
- mobile Safari
- mobile stickies (more like a notepad type feature)
- bluetooth ( using headsets, but also using the phone as a remote for keynote and the soon to be released iTV
- radio tuner ( i know this is pretty simple, but why not?)

dont think i saw it posted but one issue i have is that the iOS is on one device, the others are on how many devices made by how many makers? RIM is the only one like apple single os on single device and they just evolved to slow to keep up i think.

I would love to see a mid-tower with these in it and there seems to be some demand for a mini-macpro ;) among forum contributers (based on what I've seen). However, with the release of the 24" imac it makes me wonder if we would ever see a mid range tower. The 24" imac provides the increased power and improved GPU. Also if the GPU does turn out to be replaceable, it makes for a harder argument for mid-tower no? The price range does seem to fit well between the regular imacs and pros...
I agree that the expandability of the 24inch imac is impressive, but until I see ease of upgradability as well Im all for a mid range. Its also about the CPU, the C2D's are nice, but their not really a match for their desktop counterparts, there are some of us that want the power of a desktop but dont have the budget for the xeon range...

But, I didn't "jump" immediately - I always wait a couple of months to see what issues develop with the product line (the 17" range seems to have some graphics issues evidently, which seem to be resolved now) - BUT, with this rumor, do I plump down $4k for a maxed-out MBP now or wait until this new case design ?!?!?!

Just picked up a 3.4GHz i7 with 8GB of RAM from the Apple Store. I took it home and installed a 256GB SSD to replace the hard drive inside. Installing the OS now. I'll post Geekbench numbers soon.

Yeah, I hope when the new video iPods come out, storage capacity will be up'd as well. Honestly though, I've so many movies and tv shows on my 30gb video iPod right now, I don't think I'd need much more than a 60gb if I were to upgrade.
On my 30gb video iPod I've got stuff like all 3 of the LOTR Extended Edition movies, around 150 eps. of various Star Trek tv shows, about 30 Kids in Hall eps., all 3 Star Wars films, tons of music videos, a couple of Harry Potter movies, an anime flick, a bunch of Sealab shorts, some South Park eps. all of the Indiana Jones films, and a few more things. I still have over 7GB free for music as well.
Having an even bigger capacity drive on my iPod video--I'd go nuts. :)

I wish a Tablet Mac would come out. My fiancee wants to get a mac now that her son has one and she sees how great they are. Unfortunately she just upgraded her laptop about 4 months ago to a Tablet PC. I am due for a laptop upgrade and said my next laptop will be a Tablet but instead I'm going to the next MBP that will be coming out. She is considering it as well but doesn't want to leave the Tablet so may end up keeping the Tablet as well. I know for the PC side though sales of Tablets are slow so not sure how well that would do. I would imagine though with a Mac things could be different. I think some type of PDA type of device or something similar to the UMPC would come out, kind of a very portable laptop that could fit in a woman's purse.
My hardest thing is these all in one units. I think a lot of good things go with it, the imac is easy to move from one room of the house to the other for example but it's hard to imagine when I want to upgrade my computer having to give up the display as well. I imagine this is the type of thing though that make macs work so well. On the PC side I'm used to building my own pc's, getting the case, motherboard, drives, etc. but with that comes a lot of headaches. For those who are jailbroken with ssh installed, the file is located at /private/var/root/Library/Caches/locationd/consolidated.db on the phone. Regardless of jailbreak, it's in your iTunes backup (<home dir>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/<your device hash>) as the file 4096c9ec676f2847dc283405900e284a7c815836. It's a standard SQLite file.

just encoded 5 secs of video using the quicktime default export for ipod... now the default is 640 x 480 that plays too.Please explain exactly how from where you did that. I am still trying with handbrake and EyeTV. The EyeTV2 export is supposed to be connected to the QuickTime but the iPod default is not H.264 640x480 in the EyetV2 Export windows.

I know this sounds silly but how do you monitor processor usage from a process via Activity Monitor? I have the Developer Tools installed too. I'm not a developer but well...my work requires me to have them installed anyways.Yes that's right. I always have Activity Monitor on so I can see exactly what's going on with my four cores. I have the sort on the percentage column on the left followed by the application name and then I stick it in the lower right corner of my two screens. By keeping it open I can make sure nothing has crashed.
Both Toast and Handbrake occasionally crash during an encode or even while Toast is writing the image after an encode. Occasionally it's due to a bad original file MPEG2 glitch that will keep causing Toast to crash repeatedly. But ususally I can relaunch and re-run the process and it works fine the second time.
