I don't know how much support I'm going to get for this but are we seriously going to sit around and blame only the drunk drivers for this? I mean, really. Our entire society aggrandizes the idea of having a beer and bars/restaurants go out of their way to make drinks that have gratuitous amounts of alcohol but don't taste like it and we're going to sit around and solely blame the person.

Each drink sold has a 5 cent tax - every bar in the area has to require people to blow before they leave and if they are above .08 they have 2 options - take a cab home (paid for by the taxi-tax) or sit around, drink water and wait until it's low enough for you to drive. I've been to a fair number of bars and I've had enough where I had to have a friend drive and I will tell you that not once in my entire adult life would I have given a crap if they charged me 5 cents more per drink. Even if it had to be 10 cents more per drink I'd be fine with that as well.
As I said, if this was about safety and not just trying to get people, put them in jail and take their money they'd do that but instead they do this, help the state budget but leave millions of lives at risk every single day...

Personally, I'm not interested in buying movies for myself; I don't really like watching on the computer or iPod screen so i may as well buy the disk version of the movie and be happier on a larger screen :) . To those that are using it and enjoy, that's great. I just feel like there are many more people like me that will prefer to have physical movie versus a "digital" counterpart. Songs just seem more petty and i feel more comfortable downloading them, but movies... meh.

What I'm really curious about is if there was a huge bump in TV show sales volume with the 4 times increase in resolution.
I know I bought a show I wouldn't have otherwise and plan on buying a couple more.
The only downside to the bumped up resolution is the increased download time. Last year, I was able to download Battlestar Galactica eps in about 20 minutes... the other night I downloaded a higher res episode and it took nearly an hour... granted, my DSL isn't the best in the land and the quality was noticably better, although the previous resolution was still fine (I have my iMac hooked via DVI to a 46" Samsung DLP HDTV... front row lets me select and play the shows from my couch) but the extra time caused my wife to say "well, lets just download it overnight and watch it tomorrow"... not a huge deal or anything, but a slight step backwards from the convenience angle. It's too bad you can't choose the resolution you want to download at.

I feel vindicated in my 60GB 5G purchase a few months back, particularly since I got it on sale. If I can upgrade the software, I'm all chuckles. Besides, I've almost never found the screen brightness an issue.
I do wish I could ultra-boost the audio on-board. Some of the video digitizations I have are too quiet.

Not quite true that "Europeans" have a minimum wage of $18/hour. Remember conditions in the UK, France, Germany, Spain etc will be quite different to say Romania and Slovakia (but they will still have minimum standards set by the EU).
Later this year the UK minimum wage will be �6.08 for adults. That's $9.96 today, so $10. Presuming 5 day working week the minimum holiday amount is 28 days (5.6 weeks). The employer can control when you take time off, but can't be silly about it.
Loads of other stuff as well makes it complex. For example, you must either have 24 continual hours off in a 7 day period or 48 continual hours in 14.

I downloaded 1 movie (FlightPlan) to test the system out, but I won't be buying anymore until it is at least DVD quality (640 x 272 isn't close enough).
It's bad enough buying a movie without a case, hardcopy, or any bonus features, but to top it off, it isn't even DVD quality... and for that I pay $10?

Therefore any heavy handed, over the top, removal of protestors or dissenters is therefore viewed in relation to the current climate.
Nothing wierd about that - historians talk about 'Victorian values' to denote a wide collection of social and political mores. People see the politics of fear, of removal of long-held liberties, planting fake new stories in the press, shouting down or restricting of dissent to be the defining characteristics of the 'Bush era'.

I have to conclude that people who want to use their 10 year old CRT are just incredibly cheap and don't value their screens as much as being able to claim how fast their CPU is.
Maybe, with the current pace at which CPUs are improving, I would want to upgrade my CPU every 18 months but my screen only every 36 months?

I'd love it to be unlocked too. But they'll probably make it GSM so i'll need to switch networks. Unless they're REALLY nice and make it GSM/CDMA like my Samsung A790 (about to be on my third of those- they have a knack for survival unless you hurl them onto concrete 5 feet below you as hard as you can throw them). I'd pay tons of money for that.
Hardware locked doesn't mean GSM or CDMA. That's about what the actual radio equipment is inside the phone. I'm talking about the programming done to the phone so it will only work with one provider's network. T-Mobile and Cingular both use GSM (T-Mobile: 1900mhz, Cingular: 850mhz mostly), but you can't just take one phone to the other even though most phones from both providers support both frequencies. You would have to apply a text command to the phone to allow that.
I recently had to replace my phone (which was locked to T-Mobile) because I lost it, and I got a Cingular-branded phone which was factory unlocked. I just put my T-Mobile SIM in and it works for voice. GPRS required a call to support, and it has boot and shutdown screens w/ the little orange guy on them, but for the most part it works fine.
I also hate carrier branding on handsets. Which is why I want Apple to sell it unlocked. If they partner with Cingular (given that's how the ROKR went) I'll have to 1) buy at a Cingular dealer, 2) find someone/thing to unlock it from Cingular's network, and 3) still have the dumb Cingular logo ON THE PHONE.

Nice pieces of kit. Would this put the top of the line iMacs in the realm of professional photographers who have to do a lot of post processing? Or is the monitor not up to scratch for that? I can see huge external RAID arrays equipped with Thunderbolt to cater for the safe storage of large amounts of RAW files :D

I think the big problem with rentals is that Netflix has it wrapped up right now. You can get a ton of movies for a monthly fee, and I don't see any way an online service can compete with that, at least not without losing money on it.
If you know your best effort won't compare well to Netflix, does it really make sense to try and do it anyway? Or is it smarter just to stay out of such a cutthroat marketplace?
